Abstract

This brief from the Institute for Children, Poverty, and Homelessness (ICPH) is part of its Student Homelessness in New York City series. In this brief, ICPH looks at the lingering effects of instability among students who were homeless and have moved to permanent housing. These students continue to experience instability, such as chronic absenteeism and school transfers, at significantly higher rates than students who have never been homeless. This suggests they are dealing with other factors, such as family volatility, food insecurity, or mental or physical health challenges. This brief discusses the need to identify and support formerly homeless students to minimize the negative and long-lasting effects of housing instability. (author abstract modified)
