This report about basic needs insecurity among college students presents findings from a survey of more than 33,000 students enrolled at 70 community colleges in 24 states. From these results, the authors report that about half of community college students were housing insecure and approximately 14 percent were homeless. They found that two of every three students who participated in the survey were dealing with food insecurity. The findings indicate that two sub-populations experienced higher basic needs insecurity than other students—those who were formerly in the foster care system and those who had children.  The authors provide their research methodology and data as well as several case studies of student participants. They also offer recommendations for improving policies and practices to help address basic needs security among community college students.
