Abstract
This brief from the American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF) provides state and local policymakers with information about how they can use the requirements under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) to improve education and workforce outcomes for youth in long-term juvenile justice facilities. AYPF summaries relevant ESSA provisions and outlines the three priority areas of focus that can increase accountability among juvenile justice programs and schools in their jurisdictions. These three areas are: (1) data collection and information sharing between state and local education and juvenile justice agencies, (2) an accountability system that includes educational services within long-term juvenile justice facilities, and (3) measures to hold these educational programs and schools accountable.
